Call for Abstract

The workshop is an opportunity for people from Academia, Industries and public institutions working in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Biology and Medicine fields, to meet and discuss new research directions and collaborations with the final aim of addressing relevant problems in the life science. The main workshop aim is to create synergies among researchers from different research fields, raising a new generation of bioinformatics research groups.

We encourage each interested researcher to submit an extended abstract that briefly describes a novel project idea, or a problem in the Life Science to be addressed and discussed during the meeting. Submitted extended abstracts will be elaborated and suitably aggregated to define the most promising ideas to be explored during the meeting.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Formalisms and models for Life Science problems that emphasize the "semantics" studying their relative completeness and consistency properties and their expressive power.
  • Algorithmic, statistical, combinatorial and analytic methods, with the emphasis on "computational procedures" and relative complexity and efficiency.
  • Data Mining and Machine Learning approaches (Classification, Clustering, Feature Extraction, ...) with the emphasis on the ability to extract significant knowledge to the application domain from large amounts of data.
  • Infrastructure, tools, architectures, services with the emphasis on delivering system and services for the specific application domain.
  • Complex systems and emerging properties with the emphasis on the "system view" and the integration of multiple methods and tools, such as those used in Systems Biology.

A non-exhaustive list of possible domains of application is:

  • Analysis of sequences and assembly of genomes (sequencing algorithms, similarity analysis, evaluation of phylogenetic distances, etc)
  • Simulation of Population Dynamics (e.g., cell population) that includes the definition and simulation of computational models based on the interactions subject to specific constraints and communication / reaction mechanisms.
  • Prediction of molecular structure and functions (e.g., secondary/ tertiary / quaternary protein structures; functional annotation of protein) at various functional levels, as well as prediction of functional semantic annotations of genes and protein products.
  • Interaction and metabolic networks such as protein-protein Interaction networks, gene Regulatory Networks, metabolic networks, and general complex biological phenomena in which the interactions among the system components can be described by a network.
  • Clinical and biomedical Data Management and analysis, for example transcriptomic data (microarray, RNA-seq and its variants, etc ...), biomedical imaging data (RX, MRI, etc ...), clinical and biological data from sensors and instruments (ECG, electronic nose, ECO, etc ...), health data and bio-medical multi-domain, real-time data (data streaming).

Abstract must not exceed 4 pages, including figures and references, in Springer LNCS style. Indication of Project Calls related to the abstract is appreciated. All submissions must be in English. Submissions are handled by EasyChair at link ("https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=infolife2017).

The workshop organization is supported by the Management Committee of the CINI INFOLIFE Laboratory and will be structured as follows:

  1. Presentation of the InfoLife nodes
  2. Presentation of the selected project ideas and creation of the working groups
  3. Parallel working sessions on the selected project ideas
  4. Presentation of the brainstorming results.
The workshop follows two previous meetings of the CINI InfoLife Laboratory organized in Rome (2015) and Pisa (2016). The 2017 workshop formula aims at reflecting the maturity of the laboratory community and promoting the cross-fertilization and collaboration among the different research groups.

Invited Speakers

Venue

The InfoLife workshop will be held at CFZ – Ca’ Foscari Zattere / Cultural Flow Zone, Zattere al Pontelungo, Dorsoduro 1392, 30123 Venezia.

The InfoLife workshop will be co-located with the Wivace Workshop (19-21 September 2017) that will be held at CFZ as well. The WIVACE topics are close to the ones of the INFOLIFE CINI Laboratory, hence the participation to both workshops is encouraged.
